Addiction is typically described as a psychological or physiological dependency, which negatively impacts a person's life. Although a person may be addicted to many forms of behavior, such as gambling, over-eating, sex, or reckless behavior, the term addiction is most commonly used to refer to dependency or abuse of legal and illegal substances, such as cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. In severe cases of addiction, the habit can become so obsessive, that it may take on a life of its own, and the individual's true identity can take a second place to the personality of the addiction. Experts are unable to agree on what causes addiction, whether it is a genetic disposing condition, environmental derived, societal, or a much deeper psycho-spiritual cause of feeling disconnected and empty. One thing that all addicts seem to report is that their addiction keeps away the pain, whatever the cause may be. Long perceived as a problem of weak willpower, substance abuse is now considered to be a disease, similar in development to diabetes. Dr. Chaitow, ND, DO, of London, England, feels that addictive behavior is usually a present genetic disposing condition, that is triggered by familial, environmental, societal, dietary factors, etc. As result, he further feels that, even when stabilized, an addict must closely monitor the addictive substances throughout his or her lifetime. Nevertheless, depending on the substance or object involved, addiction can cause serious health, relationship, and/or emotional problems. Various addictions can be very difficult to overcome depending on the situation. If a person truly wants to control their dependency, then the road to recovery can begin.
