Anxiety can be defined as a painful or apprehensive uneasiness of the mind toward an anticipated or real misfortune. Emotional and physical symptoms can have varying degrees of intensity, ranging from terror and panic to general impatience or insomnia. Some symptoms may include rapid heart rate or perspiration, tremors, gastrointestinal distress, trembling, twitching, muscle soreness, frustration, unable to relax, dry mouth, dizziness, impatience and being irritable or having difficulty in concentration. Elements of social phobia may sometimes be present, such as high levels of self- consciousness in some situations, and even fear of not being able to escape from enclosed spaces. Many times anxiety will accompany depression and may be the first noticeable sign of onset of psychosis. In the case of generalized anxiety,it is also common, but not universal, for people to experience other problems, such as quickness to startle, a lack of ability to fully relax, and a propensity to be in a state of constant motion. It is very difficult for some people with generalized anxiety to settle down long enough to have a quiet, reflective time, even when they are in a somewhat peaceful space. Therapy strategies to bring about a peaceful and relaxed state of being is one of the primary parts of overcoming anxiety problems. Normal life stresses aggravate generalized anxiety. The person who typically performs well at work and receives accomplishment from it, may all of a sudden find that work has become drudgery. If work is perceived as a negative environment, and the person no longer feels fulfilled, then considerable worry will take place over these types of situations.
