Called Huang-ch'I in China, Astralagus is one of the great Chinese herbs, traditionally used for wasted and eroded skin. The root is quite fibrous, with a faintly sweetish taste, which resembles that of liqorice root. Its uses are numberless, both as a tonic and a diuretic, although its most frequent use in the Orient is traditionally for Maleria.
