Native to a number of South Pacific Islands, Kava Kava is a species of the Pepper family and is normally considered a mild sedative or tranquilizer. The root is most usually used for making a ceremonial beverage in the islands, such a Fiji, where it is used as an alternative by the natives to their addiction to alcohol and abusive drinking.
Oceanic peoples call it by many different names. Fijians know their sacred drink as yanqona, the Rarotongans call it kava, and the Hawaiians call it awa. The Yanqona drink induces a relaxed feeling in the body while maintaining a high degree of clear-headenness. The Yonqona plant has been cultivated since antiquity as evidenced by the many horticultural firms; for example, the Hawaiians have at least a dozen different varieties. The root has a lilac odor and a bitter taste, having tonic, stimulant, diuretic and diaphoretic qualities.
Not surprisingly, a commercial tranquilizer is made from this plant in Germany. Prior to World War I, Kava Kava Root was traditionally used in Europe in proprietary preparations for treating gout, gonorrhea, and cystitis. In the Pacific Islands, the plant was used to treat venereal diseases, inflammations of the uterus, and convulsions, pain and crying in children. Currently it is traditionally widely used to relax and cut stress for students and others, while having the qualities to maintain a clear head.
