Yarrow plants can grow from sea level to over 12,000 feet high (Colorado Rockies). The plant at sea level in Oregon grows huge (over 3 feet tall) and the plant at Independence Pass in Colorado grows barely over 1 inch high, struggling for its very existence in a light snowstorm in July. The genus, to which Yarrow belongs, was named after Achilles, who supposedly discovered the medicinal virtues of the plant.
Yarrow was well known by the Native Americans as a tonic for run-down conditions and indigestion. Traditionally, it is considered most useful in treating colds, influenza, measles, smallpox, chickenpox, fevers, and acute catarrhs of the respiratory tract. The properties have the ability to keep up the strength and act as a blood cleanser, at the same time opening up the pores to permit free perspiration.
Combined with Elder Flowers and Peppermint, it is actually more effective than Quinine for treating fevers. It also exercises influence over several other ailments, such as incontinence of urine and where there are mucus discharges from the bladder, dyspepsia, and suppressed or restrained menses or profuse continued menstruation.
